Texas Mutual Launches Driving Safety Campaign
Just when it looked like microchips and hard drives had replaced wells and refineries as icons of the Texas economy, the oil and gas industry made a comeback. Nowhere is the resurgence more evident than in West Texas.
The oil boom has created high-paying jobs and pumped money into the state's economy. It has also contributed to a rise in transportation-related accidents.
"From 2009 to 2011, the number of automobile-related fatalities in the oil and gas industry was up almost 20 percent," said Steve Bills, loss prevention services manager at Texas Mutual.
Texas Mutual is working to reverse the trend.
In June, they kicked off a driving safety campaign in Midland and Odessa. Though the campaign targets the oil and gas industry, anyone can visit safehandtexas.org for safe-driving tips.
